Animal poop, a seemingly mundane topic, has emerged as a pivotal force in the evolution of life on Earth. A recent study, published in the journal Trends in Ecology and Evolution, reveals that the emergence of sophisticated digestive systems in animals 540 million years ago led to a surge in faecal production. This abundance of organic matter, in the form of animal waste, acted as a catalyst, altering the chemistry of ancient oceans and creating a stable, nutrient-rich environment. This process, known as the 'biological pump', facilitated the transport of essential nutrients from the surface to the deep seafloor, fostering the conditions necessary for life to flourish and diversify. The fossil record, particularly coprolites (fossilized faeces), provides a fascinating insight into this ancient phenomenon. These pellets, ranging from tiny to several millimetres long, offer a glimpse into the diets and feeding strategies of prehistoric animals. As animals grew larger, their waste grew with them, indicating a diverse range of feeding habits. The study's authors, Julien Kimmig and Russell Bicknell, propose a 'positive feedback loop' where the increase in faecal size and nutrient distribution supported larger and more diverse life forms, ultimately shaping the complex marine systems we observe today. This discovery highlights the often-overlooked importance of animal waste in the evolutionary process, offering a unique perspective on the history of life on our planet.
